Blackpool Transport has helped carry a potent symbol of hope that’s saving lives by raising awareness of the biggest killer of men and women under the age of 35.

Earlier this week, the bus and tram operator took part in a national baton relay organised as part of a campaign urging people to stand up to suicide.

The beautifully crafted ‘Baton of Hope’ is now touring towns and cities across the UK following the launch of the relay on the Fylde Coast yesterday (September 1) at an event organised by the Blackpool-based Empowerment Charity.

During the first leg of the tour, the baton and its supporters hitched a ride on a tram, and Jane Cole, Blackpool Transport Managing Director, said the operator was delighted to support the initiative at the request of a member of her team with close connections to the campaign.

“Suicide affects so many people who often suffer in silence following the loss of a loved one, and we wanted to show that we stand in solidarity with them,” she said.

“We are also very proud of Lisa, one of our conductors, who carried the baton in memory of someone close to her and proved an excellent ambassador for Blackpool on what proved to be an emotional yet inspiring day.”

The overall aim of the relay is to help reduce suicides through public education and awareness, and further information about the Baton of Hope can be found on the Empowerment Charity website here.
