Blackpool Heritage

Fans of Blackpool’s iconic heritage trams are in for treat next week with the return of two historic vehicles for special ‘Illumination Tours’ during the town’s Lightpool celebrations.

Following extensive checks by independent experts and a series of test trips, HMS Blackpool and vintage double-decker Tram 717 are set for a historic return to the seafront throughout the festival, which gets underway on October 15.

The iconic vehicles will run three trips a night between the Pleasure Beach and Little Bispham on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until November 1.

Jane Cole, our Managing Director, says the return of the Illumination Tours marks a significant milestone in its plans for the heritage fleet.

“Over the past few months, our engineers have worked tirelessly to ensure these trams can operate to the latest safety standards, and I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible,” she explained.

“Everyone at Blackpool Transport is really excited about seeing these much-loved vehicles return to service for the special tours during the Lightpool Festival, and we can’t wait to welcome passengers aboard for these special trips.

Anyone who wants to enjoy a nostalgic trip on HMS Blackpool (fleet number 736), designed to resemble a sea-going frigate, or tram 717, which is famed for its balloon-like shape, can book online now.

“Following the festival, the trams will temporarily return to storage while we plan for future heritage tours.” Jane added.

Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, commented: “We’ve always known how important heritage trams are to our visitor economy. They are a big part of our history and heritage, and it will be great to see them back on the tracks. “We’ve worked exceptionally hard with Blackpool Transport to make sure they can return for Lightpool Festival, and I really hope that people enjoy seeing the trams and more importantly show their commitment by booking on the pre-paid tours.”

Tickets for the llumination Tours are priced at £15 for adults and £10 for children and include unlimited travel on Blackpool Transport’s regular tram services on the same day as the booked trip.

Starting from the Pleasure Beach at 6 pm, 7:30 pm and 9 pm, the return trips run to Little Bispham, offering one of the best ways to enjoy the famous illuminations.
